Gwen Beloti teams up with L.A.C.E. Leading Ladies: Learning Achieving & Creating Excellence. L.A.C.E. was created in 2007, the organization participates in various educational programs, dress drives, walks and community programs to better promote helping the community through fashion. They also try to inspire children to live an environmentally conscious life by suggesting alternative ways to protect the environment. L.A.C.E is a chapter of one of the leading prom dress drive organizations, Donatemydress.org.

GB and its Fashionably Smart, Literally™ gals had the pleasure of working with L.A.C.E. in 2011 and will team up with them again this year by designing, creating, and donating a prom dress for a young lady in need.

L.A.C.E. has been asked to participate in Macy's Herald Square "Prom Event" on March 31, 2012, sponsored by donatemydress.org, Z100 and others.
Young ladies will be able to purchase dresses at a discounted price if they donate a lightly used dress to one of the present organizations. Lucky girls will receive manicures, hair tips, make-overs and great goody bags.

The young ladies whom are interested in participating are currently working on their essays, depicting what education means to them as young women. We look forward to reading them and moving forward with the program. We'll continue to post and share our projects and experiences as we've done in the past.

We sometimes get caught up in current trends and lose sight of what's flattering for us. Fit and flatter are extremely important, they're the make and break factors of a look that works.

When buying clothing, your priority should be you first and the trend second. I think we've all fallen victim to wearing something that didn't exactly accentuate our best attributes. It is important to know your body and always keep in mind what has and hasn't worked in the past. It's okay to play it safe and typically wear straight fit vs. flare because that's what flatters your figure the best. Areas where you can experiment and spice up your look without compromising the fit could be fabric selection, color pallet and trimmings.

I say that to say, if it compliments you then make it yours and if it doesn't then its on to the next ;)

I posted previously about a novel that the Gwen Beloti Collection was mentioned in; though I don't know the author Shelia M. Goss I'm humbled and appreciative that she'd mention my brand in her latest novel.

pg 233-234

“I have a surprise for you. My personal designer will have your dress designed for your formal wear.”

“Gwen Beloti’s the best,” I said. I couldn’t hold my excitement. I would be the envy of all my friends if I wore one of her creations.

“It should be waiting for us when we get home, “ Mom said.

And, sure enough, there was a package with my name on it waiting for me in the foyer. We went to my room, and my mom helped me take it from the box. My mouth hung in awe when I removed the deep purple dress from the garment bag. The fabric felt heavenly.

I stepped out of my clothes and tried the dress on. Perfect. The knee-length dress was classy yet youthful. The shimmer on top matched my widened smile.

“Magnificent. A dress for a princess,” Mom said.

I twirled around in my dress and didn’t want to take it off. “I can’t wait until Saturday,” I said, when I finally forced myself to carefully get out of the dress.

My mom helped me put it back on its hanger, and she placed it in my closet for me, while I changed into some other clothes.

My hope is that all women who step into a Gwen Beloti piece feel the way the young lady in this novel felt.

.....Timisha! is the GB Fashionably Smart, Literally winner for 2010-2011. I've definitely seen her growth over the course of the school year and our time together; as I've seen in all the girls. Timisha has selected her GB dress to wear to her graduation next week and appears to be as excited as I, lol.

I must say it was definitely a hard decision to make because all of the girls were great. They each brought their own gift and individuality to the program. I'm grateful to have gotten to know them. Ghasi, Kanedra, Tia, and Timisha you girls are dolls and I'm sure the future holds great things for each of you. A special thank you to their school advisor Ms. Blackwell for helping coordinate FSL at the school and being the go between.

I couldn't not give them all something so I have something special for each girl....Make Ms. Gwen proud.

On Friday I had the pleasure of dining @ the Gallery with a couple of my FSL™ girls, Tia and Kenedra. Unfortunately Gyasi and Timisha were unable to attend, but were thoroughly missed. The school year is about to come to a close, they've gone to their prom and will be graduating in just a couple of weeks. As the school year ends, Fashionably Smart, Literally™ 2010-2011 wraps up. I will need to pick one of these girls that I've worked with throughout the school year to give a dress to. This is a really hard decision and I'd love to give them each something. Let's see what happens, stay tuned...

But before they leave me, though I hope they'll work with GB over the summer, we had to eat, chat, and of course take pictures :).They're a group of great girls that I'm glad I had to opportunity to get to know. I hope FSL™ 2011-2012 is just as interesting.

Of the selections submitted by my FSL™ girls this is who we're happy to be of assistance to. My girls and I will be designing and making the dress that we will donate to a young lady by way of L.A.C.E.

L.A.C.E was created in 2007, and was started by two best friends with a common goal of helping underprivileged women & children in urban communities. L.A.C.E. also known as Ladies About Creating Excellence is a non-profit organization partnered with donatemydress.org . They participate in various educational programs, dress drives, walks and community programs to better promote helping the community through fashion. They also try to inspire children to live an environmentally conscious life by suggesting alternative ways to protect the environment.

On May 14^th L.A.C.E will be hosting the Fashion Collision at a Brooklyn Public Library. At this event a student in need will get a Gwen Beloti dress. My girls and I are siked about it…at least I think they are :). I’m looking forward to it. If you know someone in need of a dress please spread the word.

This passed Tuesday I had the pleasure of attending the BET Music Matters Tour featuring, Anthony David, Melanie Fiona, and headliner Mz. Marsha Ambrosius. The show was absolutely fab, great talent and great time. Marsha Ambrosius is amazing and I am a die hard fan.
I wanted to wear something reminiscent of my latest collection Fall 2011 "Concerted Versatility". So I decided to remix one of the dresses by heightening the collar and using a different fabrication for the front panel of skirt part of the dress.Tthe concert was early evening and standing room, so I felt like being simple, comfortable, but w/ a lil bit of shimmer, hence the glisten in my purple. Good time had!!

So I get a call from my friend and we're talking...10 minutes into the convo he tells me "Oh my friend called and said she saw you in a mag" I said "No really? describe it." He proceeds to do so and I just know he's not telling the truth, lol. I ask him to fwd me the pic that his friend sent to him and what do you know....
I'm now on the hunt for a copy of the mag. If you find it before I do let me know :)...And please excuse my excitement over such things but I am marveled at this journey and humbled by the small things ;).

Prom Dress to Impress™ 2011: Which will it be?

My girls are hard at work….

For the last couple of years the Gwen Beloti Collection has participated in some form of a prom dress giveaway and in turn created Prom Dress to Impress™. Prom Dress to Impress™ is a GB initiative charged with donating a dress to a young woman and/or organization in need of a dress each year.

This year I decided to get the FSL ladies involved. For the month of March, the project for the girls, my Fashionably Smart, Literally™ candidates/interns, was to research various outlets of which we could collaborate with in donating a dress. Each of them has provided me with good selections to review and the reasons why they feel their choices are good ones. We will take that into consideration and we'll ultimately decide which GB will go with for 2011.

The fun part though will start in a couple of weeks. My girls will actually help me design and make the dress. I’m really looking forward to that and I hope they’re as excited as I am :)

Today's Black Woman Magazine: Style Report features Gwen Beloti Collection

Unbeknownst to me the Gwen Beloti Collection has made the 99th page of the April/May issue of Today's Black Woman Magazine- Style Report. I heard through the grapevine that my work was in there but I had to see it to believe it. Talk about a SUPER cool surprise. I am excited, grateful and humbled.

This nationally distributed print magazine decided to headline feature my work in their BlackShopping Guide. The pieces they featured were the long sleeve cocktail dress from the Fall collection and the large leather duffel handbag.

Check it out if you can; online the digital version should be available any day now and the print version is in stores now. The Court St. Barnes and Noble though you may want to avoid, I think I purchased just about all of them :), is carrying it. I'm sorry if I'm overly excited, but this is definitely one for the scrap book and hopefully much more to come.

Inspiration - GB FA '11 "Concerted Versatility"

As you know this February I debuted my Fall Winter 2011 collection in NY, “Concerted Versatility”. The inspiration for this collection was Versatility, hence the title :). I wanted to create a line that was versatile yet cohesive. The goal was to create a collection of which the pieces could be mixed and matched and paired with items already in your closet. This concept of versatility I wanted to also extend to catering to an assortment of women. Providing the opportunity to wear one of the pieces to a business meeting or a red carpet event, and go from day to night was my focal point in designing this line.

The fabrication I used to achieve this included my staple fabric 'silk', as well as a lightweight wool, and handmade sequin fabric. I wanted the color pallet to exude a sense of warmth and comfort intensified with a subtle glow and the different shades of navy allowed me to capture that. I used the pop of white satin brighten things up a bit. There is a piece in here for every woman.

This collection has an element of simplicity and wear ability, but with a little pizaz. My goal was to achieve just that, real good quality pieces with an obvious hint of innovation and great fit.

The aspiration was to create a line that was versatile yet cohesive. I hope you enjoy!

The Gwen Beloti Mixed Tape: Oh How Music Makes Me High

I often listen to music as I design, sketch, sew, fit, and the likes. There is something similarly therapeutic between the two. The opportunity to sang, yes “sang” at the top of my lungs while I curate, talk about an added bonus. Thank God non-professional singing doesn’t require too much thought and focus, often times I’m totally oblivious to it…

Singing melodies while cutting fabric with scissors that bruise after awhile and standing for hours on end while the soles of my feet wish I would have a seat..

Reciting rhymes of my favorite rappers while sewing, draping and pinning with needles that pierce..

Doing the background vocals for Mary at 4am as I finish up hems and trims that must be done by 7 in the morning..

Talk about a pro multi-tasker, oh that’s me, and I’m not complaining…I’m just saying ;)

I LOVE IT. I DO.

My journey as an emerging designer is much like that of an independent music artist…

Their mixed tape a compilation of various musical works and collaborations…Mine an array of designs composed of different fabrications, textures and story lines. Cohesive? Oh that’s neither here nor there in the pressing scheme of things. What is immediate and urgent is our mission to sell the quality, passion, and drive that defines our work, of which we’re already sold on…. TO YOU.

This hustle part of the journey is a necessary one and we’re appreciative for it. We’re grateful for the buzz we gain and the element of humility that comes with it.. BUT secretly we await the stamp of ‘official’ by way of a label deal or department store placement.

Though I wasn’t blessed with “a” singing voice I was given the ability to carry a tune, tunes that have carried me through many of moons doing what I love to do, design, design, and design. Oh how music makes me HIGH.

Please stay tuned as the Metrocard purchased to finance this harmoniously emerging journey is nowhere near depleted. The best has yet to come.

This past Saturday was the look-book shoot for the latest collection “Concerted Versatility“ Fall 2011. When you see the collection I’m hoping it’ll be evident why we titled it such. This collection was intentionally a relatively small collection. As a designer with a love for creativity and fashions’ endless possibilities its quite easy to get carried away, but this go round I didn’t want my focal point to be questionable. To one’s self the vision and goal is always clear, but that vision doesn’t always resonate to the audience. I wanted to focus my energy on cohesion and a clear story line, which I'll tell you more about soon. Please stayed tuned…but until then here are a few snap shots from the shoot and a peak at a collection look through my eyes and vision, enjoy!

A Small Token: Little Dresses for Africa

So my FSL™ girls' project for the month of January was to design and make a dress to donate to the charity Little Dresses for Africa. Keeping in mind they are not professional designers or sewers (yet) I must admit I'm pleased and delighted with their submissions. I'm ecstatic not so much about the pieces themselves but that these girls took time out of their busy 'senior in high school' schedules to do something for someone else without directly expecting anything in return.

Anne Lowe (Preceding Essential)

an African American fashion designer who designed the wedding dress for Jacqueline Bouvier when she married John F. Kennedy.

She was born in Clayton, Alabama the great granddaughter of a slave and plantation owner. She married in 1912 at age 14 and enrolled in a fashion school in New York City in 1917. After graduation she opened a salon in Tampa, Florida before returning to New York in 1928 where she worked on commission for stores such as Chez Sonia.

In 1946 she designed the dress that Olivia de Havilland wore to accept the Academy Award for Best Actress for To Each His Own (film) -- although the name on the dress was Sonia Rosenberg. She designed for various upper crust New Yorkers including the ivory-silk-taffeta dress for Jackie in 1953.

She worked her later years at Saks Fifth Avenue where she was featured in a 1960 advertisement.

Felled by glaucoma she lost an eye but continued to design through 1960 for Madeline Couture and briefly operated Ann Lowe Originals on Madison Avenue in New York. -Wikipedia

At the showing of my latest collection FW 2011 I was delighted to have in attendance my FSL girls. These are the young ladies from the high school that the Gwen Beloti Collection collaborated with this 2010-2011 school year on our Fashionably Smart, Literally™ initiative. They are high school seniors preparing to graduate and in their free time they intern with me.

The purpose of the project is to promote education and empowerment in young women. Each month we collaborate on a project. For the month of January the ladies made dresses for the charity organization Little Dresses for Africa, of which the GB Collection teams up with periodically.

I appreciate them taking time out time to help someone else. I'm looking forward to posting pics of their dresses and shipping them to LDFA. I was delighted to have the girls with me at the show to help out and support. Beautiful young women each with their own style and flair. Education is truly fundamental and should be taken full advantage of at every opportunity!!!! Shout out to my girls!

Meet Willi Donnell Smith (February 29, 1948 – April 17, 1987)

Willi graduated from the Parson School of design and was one of the most successful young fashion designers in fashion history. At the time of his death, his company Williwear Ltd. sold $25 million worth of clothing a year.
Smith concentrated primarily on separates, and his consistency from season to season allowed pieces from previous years to be mixed with his new designs. Pieces ranged from oversized blazers and long dirndls to dhoti pants and pouf-skirted dresses. Everything he designed showed a sense of humor and spirit, as if inviting the wearer to get up and move. He paid acute attention to all aspects of design and manufacture, designing his own textiles and taking several trips each year to India to overlook production of his collection. (via answers.com)

By the mid-1980s Smith's designs were hanging in 1,100 stores in the United States, as well as stores in London. WilliWear grossed $25 million in 1986. He designed the Groom and Groomsmen attire for the wedding of Socialite Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg and created a bit of a furor with the uncharacteristic look he designed for Edwin A. Schlossberg suit. The groom's outfit featured a navy blue linen suit with a silver tie.Willie would eventually go on to win numerous awards and accolades before his death in 1987 at the age of thirty nine.

I received an email this afternoon from a young lady who is an aspiring fashion designer that wants to launch her own line. She asked if I could help her out by giving her a few pointers and some advice. My response, sure let’s touch base some time after fashion week. I then asked how she had come across me and my brand….

…My mom works in a salon that has yearly subscriptions to Elle, Vogue, and TBW, and when the new issues are delivered they throw the old ones away. My mom saves them for me and I read about black designers and I check out their websites to see what kind of work they do and to give me an insight to the newest trends, and a fashion edge that allows me to stay ahead of the curve. In the back of TBW there is a black shopping guide with a listing/ directory of designers and boutique owners featured in their magazine. That's how I found you. Thanks for your response, and I will be contacting you again at a later date.

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of celebrating my best friend of over 20 years' birthday in NYC. I got to wear a piece from my fall '09 collection. A good excuse to go out and play dress up is always nice. Good fun with the gals.
